Hoeven To Call Special Redistricting Session Of Legislature
BISMARCK, N.D. - Governor John Hoeven today issued an executive order calling the North Dakota Legislative Assembly into session at 9 a.m. on November 26, 2001 to address redistricting. The move came in response to a request by the legislative leadership for Hoeven to call the Legislature into special session to finalize the state’s electoral district map in accordance with the 2000 census and the North Dakota Century Code.
In calling the session, Hoeven asked that several concerns be addressed: first, that the Legislature enter the session with a plan for redistricting; second, that lawmakers limit the number of session days; and third, that they address the issue of financial privacy.
Hoeven said the Legislative Council Tuesday approved introducing a redistricting bill during the special session, and the leadership of both parties has indicated that lawmakers will work to accomplish their agenda in five days. In addition, Hoeven said, lawmakers indicated that they would consider his request that they suspend the effective date of the state’s new financial privacy law until June 11, 2002, when voters will have an opportunity to decide the issue on a regularly scheduled election ballot. The move is responsive to the referral petition and would avoid a costly special election just months before the scheduled election, according to Hoeven.
“Redistricting is difficult work,” Hoeven said. “I commend both the leadership and the Legislative Redistricting Committee for their efforts.”
