Hoeven Proclaims "Veterans Awareness Week"

BISMARCK, N.D. - Governor John Hoeven today proclaimed November 11, 2001 through November 17, 2001, as "Veterans Awareness Week" in honor of the men and women who have served our country in the U.S. military.

Hoeven called upon North Dakotans to reflect on the sacrifices made by our veterans, and encouraged educators throughout the state to invite veterans into the schools to share their core principles with the state's youth. The Governor urged support of the observance throughout the week with suitable commemorative expressions and programs to honor and respect our veterans for their courage and devotion to country. Hoeven will kick off Veterans Awareness Week with an Excellence in Education tour, devoted to showcasing North Dakota schools' and colleges' finest programs and projects.

"We often don't recognize the price of liberty until liberty must be defended," Hoeven said. "As a state and as a nation, we dedicate this week to expressing our gratitude to the men and women who were willing to make the ultimate sacrifice in defense of freedom."

Honoring our veterans and inviting them into the classroom is especially meaningful now, as we wage our war on terrorism, according to Hoeven. "Future leaders of the state and nation need to be aware of the true meaning of freedom and democracy. They need to understand the legacy of those who fought on the battlefields of Europe, Asia and the Persian Gulf to fully appreciate the sacrifices being made today by our men and women in uniform in Afghanistan," he said.

The state proclamation coincides with a national proclamation issued by President Bush, in conjunction with the President's "Lessons in Liberty" initiative. "Lessons in Liberty" encourages students to focus on the true meaning of patriotism as they explore America's history. During visits to classrooms, veterans would have an opportunity to share their experiences with students and explain why Veterans Days is such a meaningful holiday.

"There are true American heroes among us," Hoeven said. "We set aside this one week to honor them, and we should be mindful of their courage and their sacrifices every day of the year."
