North Dakota Granted Its First Statewide "Continuum of Care" To Address Needs of Homeless Population

BISMARCK, N.D. - North Dakota will receive $1.7 million for the state’s first-ever Continuum of Care Plan. The North Dakota Continuum of Care (ND CoC) is a long term, comprehensive planning and development initiative that will identify the causes of homelessness, the needs of the people who are homeless, and how to prevent homelessness. The statewide effort also seeks to help move families and individuals into stable, permanent housing.

“The sign of a compassionate society is measured by the way we treat our elderly and our needy,” Hoeven said. “Through the efforts of the private sector and government at all levels, together we can make a difference in people’s lives.”

The North Dakota Coalition for Homeless People, Inc. is the lead entity for the North Dakota Continuum of Care Plan. The funding will cover seven programs to address homelessness in the state. The ND CoC seeks to educate government, social service agencies, businesses, and the community at large about the many aspects of homelessness, advocate for additional resources to address homelessness, and to increase coordination with local, state, and federal funding sources.

The projects covered by the ND CoC funding include two transitional, and five permanent housing facilities in Williston, Bismarck, Grand Forks and Fargo, but the funding has the potential to help persons who are homeless across the state. In addition to the $1,756,880 in funding, the North Dakota Continuum of Care will generate an additional $3,904,581 in public and private assistance in local communities.

The following projects have been awarded funding for the 2001 Continuum of Care Competition:
