Lt. Governor Meeting With Congressional Officials On Farm Bill, Pesticide Harmonization

BISMARCK, N.D. - Governor John Hoeven today announced that Lt. Governor Jack Dalrymple is in Washington, D.C. this week meeting with key members of the Bush Administration and key Senate officials to promote a new farm bill and chemical-harmonization legislation.

Hoeven said he is pleased that Dalrymple will be in Washington during the Farm Bill debate. “We worked very hard last session to get an effective safety net for farmers passed in Washington, and the debate is heating up considerably now that the new session is underway. This is a good time to have Jack, a farmer himself, working with Senators as the bill hits the floor.”

Dalrymple will be participating in meetings with senior White House advisors. He will also be meeting with Senate Agriculture committee member, Sen. Craig Thomas (R- WY) and staff representatives for Sen. Larry Craig (R- ID) and Sen. Mike Enzi (R- WY).

Dalrymple is urging lawmakers to achieve a compromise on the farm bill, and to work for swift passage. “If the Senate can pass a bill, and we can get a comprehensive legislation through the conference committee soon, I believe that the USDA can make the support available for the 2002 growing season, which is critical for North Dakota farmers,” Dalrymple said.

Dalrymple will also be working to recruit co-sponsors for chemical-harmonization legislation that will allow state agriculture departments to authorize farmers to use pesticides sold in either the US or Canada.

“The legislation is important to farmers all along the US Canadian border,” Dalrymple said. “I will help put them on a more even competitive position with Canadian producers. I believe support for the bill is strong, and we are going to help get the bipartisan backing it needs to get passed.”
