BISMARCK, N.D. - Governor John Hoeven in a letter last week called on Secretary of Veterans Affairs Anthony Principi to restore services to veterans at the state’s three regional satellite clinics.
Under a recent action by the Veterans Administration, regional clinics in Bismarck, Minot and Grafton have stopped accepting new patients, forcing some veterans to commute up to three or four hours to Fargo for even routine medical care.
“At a time when America’s reliance on our military and our indebtedness to our veterans should be foremost in our hearts and minds, I must object to the Administration’s decision,” Hoeven wrote the secretary.
Hoeven pledged to continue his effort to have service restored and offered his assistance to the VA in reversing its decision, citing its impact not only on veterans who served in the past, but also those who are serving now.
“We owe a great deal to the men and woman who have safeguarded our homeland in the past,” Hoeven wrote. “Those who are safeguarding our nation today will rely on those services tomorrow. I urge you in the strongest terms to reverse this questionable decision.”
