Hoeven Meets With Ag Leaders, Gives Keynote Address At Nebraska Agriculture Forum
BISMARCK, N.D. - Governor John Hoeven today met in Nebraska with farm leaders on a broad range of industry issues and opportunities.
“The forum was another opportunity to work with leaders in the industry to address national farm issues and garner support for passage of a 2002 farm bill,” Hoeven said. “Not only farm country, but all America benefits from the right kind of farm plan.”
Invited by Nebraska Governor Mike Johanns, Hoeven gave the keynote address during the 14th annual Governor’s Ag Conference in Kearney, Nebraska.
“Governor Hoeven is knowledgeable on farm issues. He’s working hard on the national farm policy, and he’s a friend of farmers in our rural states,” Johanns said. “The work he is doing in value-added ag and economic development in rural areas is creditable, and making an impact on both the state and national levels.”
Hoeven told an audience of about 350 farmers, ranchers and agribusiness people that more work is needed to expand agricultural opportunities in the Midwestern states.
“Value-added ag, technology and trade can help open doors in the world market for our farmers and producers,” Hoeven said. “Agriculture is the lifeblood in helping to create more jobs and income opportunities in rural America.”
Farm leaders joining Hoeven at the daylong forum included Michael Neruda, U.S. Department of Agriculture deputy under secretary for rural development; Joe Davis, C.E.O. and farm policy analysis consultant with AgriLogic; and Jean-Mari Peltier, agriculture counselor to Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Christie Todd Whitman.
Hoeven said his meetings with Neruda and Peltier were helpful in pushing North Dakota issues to the forefront with federal farm policy decision makers.
