Hoeven Announces Disaster Designations For N.D. Counties

BISMARCK, N.D. - Governor Hoeven announced today that several North Dakota counties have received a Secretarial disaster designation from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The designation is due to losses caused by flooding, ground saturation, subsidence, storms, wind, tornadoes, drought, high humidity, and severe temperatures that occurred from March 1, 2001, and that are continuing.

“Eligibility for low-interest loans under this designation will help our farmers, who are already struggling under low prices, get their operations back in order after severe spells of weather,” Hoeven said.

Thirty-two counties have been designated as “primary natural disaster areas.” Receiving disaster assistance are:

Primary Natural Disaster Areas
Barnes Eddy Pembina Slope
Benson Emmons Pierce Stutsman
Bottineau Foster Ramsey Towner
Bowman Grand Forks Ransom Traill
Burke Kidder Renville Walsh
Cass Logan Richland Ward
Cavalier Mountrail Rolette Wells
Divide Nelson Sargent Williams

In accordance with the Consolidated Farm and Rural Development Act, the following 18 additional counties have been named as contiguous disaster counties:

Contiguous Disaster Counties
Adams Griggs McLean
Billings Hettinger Morton
Burleigh La Moure Sheridan
Dickey McHenry Sioux
Dunn McIntosh Stark
Golden Valley McKenzie Steele

This designation makes farm operators in both primary and contiguous counties eligible to be considered for low-interest emergency loans from the Farm Service Agency (FSA), provided eligibility requirements are met. FSA will consider each loan application on its own merits, taking into account the extent of losses, security available, and repayment ability. Local FSA offices can provide affected farmers with further information.

“We’re pleased that the U.S.D.A. is being responsive to the needs of our farmers during these difficult times,” Hoeven said.
