Hoeven Signs Agreement To Extend Unemployment Compensation

BISMARCK, N.D. - Governor Hoeven today announced that he signed an agreement with the U. S. Secretary of Labor on March 8, 2002, to provide Temporary Extended Unemployment Compensation (TEUC) benefits to North Dakota residents.

Hoeven praised Job Service North Dakota for making quick work of the necessary filings to receive the additional funding that will benefit the state’s unemployed.

“North Dakota may have the lowest unemployment rate in the nation,” Hoeven said, “but that doesn’t mean that some people haven’t found themselves out of work. They’ll need assistance finding re-employment as businesses begin to hire again and new businesses start up.”

Any individuals who filed for unemployment benefits during the week of March 11, 2001, or later and have used all benefits available to them; or have reached the end of their benefit year, and are currently unemployed, may potentially be eligible for TEUC beginning the week of March 10, 2002.

“An extension of benefits during this bumpy economic period and time of transition in the state’s economy is a real win for North Dakota,” Hoeven said. “We need to be responsive to people when they’re experiencing temporary financial difficulty, or when they need retraining, so that they can make the transition back into the workforce.”

Individuals who believe they may qualify can contact their nearest Job Service office or call 1-800-472-2222.
