Federal Grant Awarded To North Dakota To Reduce Flooding In Bismarck

BISMARCK, N.D. - Governor Hoeven announced today that the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the North Dakota Division of Emergency Management has approved a federal grant of $1,287,900 for implementation of a storm water facility to reduce overland flooding in west central Bismarck during heavy rains. The total estimated cost to implement the project is $1,717,200.

"Growth and development are continuing in this area and we saw the opportunity to reduce flooding problems," Hoeven said. "The result of this project will be improved storm water flow along the Jackman Coulee."

The project area is along the Coulee with sites extending from north of I-94 to south of West Main Avenue and focuses on measures to reduce erosion, which causes a build-up of silt, creates obstructions in the flow, and ultimately causes flooding. The project will also create improved upstream detention storage.

The grant is funded through FEMA's Hazard Mitigation Grant Program, which provides funding for mitigation work designed to break the cycle of damage and repair common in areas prone to disaster. This is accomplished by funding projects that lessen the damage from future events.

This grant is a result of severe storms and flooding that occurred in the Bismarck area in the summer of 1999.
