BISMARCK, N.D. - Governor Hoeven announced today in Valley City the formation of the State Commission on National and Community Service.
The commission’s purpose is to foster a bi-partisan, state-level commitment to advancing volunteer and community service initiatives in North Dakota, and to play a leadership role in developing, communicating and promoting a statewide vision of service throughout the state. The State Commission, created as a result of Executive Order 2002-02, is a separate and independent division of the North Dakota Workforce Development Council.
“The community service learning experience that our students will be exposed to is a great North Dakota tradition,” Hoeven said. “A commission of dedicated citizens devoted to the betterment of our people and our state will raise that tradition to a new, more effective level.”
Hoeven is in Valley City today as part of his “Excellence in Education” tour across the state. He announced the development of the commission during stops at the Junior and Senior High School, elementary schools and Valley City State University. Valley City Public Schools Superintendent Dean Koppelman received the news enthusiastically.
“This is outstanding news for our state,” Koppelman said. “Its an exciting opportunity for our schools and our students. We thank Governor Hoeven for his support of this program.”
Functions of the State Commission include the development of a three-year comprehensive national and community service plan and establishment of State priorities, preparation of Service Learning applications, and other administrative programs and activities.
“Valley City Public Schools, Administration and Faculty have been instrumental in moving this commission to the forefront,” Hoeven said. “Now multiply that public spiritedness by all the work of our schools, and you can see what North Dakotans can do for themselves and for others.”
