Hoeven Receives Achievement Award
BISMARCK, N.D. - The North Dakota Emergency Management Association today presented Governor John Hoeven with the Association Achievement Award for 2001. The award recognized Hoeven for his strong leadership in the homeland security mission since September 11.
“By utilizing Doug Friez and his staff at the State Division of Emergency Management to work with emergency preparedness groups at a local level, Governor Hoeven initiated an effective and efficient homeland security program in North Dakota,” said JoAnn Ozbun, North Dakota Emergency Management Association president. “That demonstrated how important he felt homeland defense and security in North Dakota is.”
Following the events of September 11, Hoeven built on the State’s existing security plan, in cooperation with state and local agencies and federal authorities, to respond quickly and efficiently protect the public in the aftermath of the attacks on New York and Washington, D.C. These efforts include the appointment of a state homeland security coordinator; activation of the Emergency Operation Center and the state emergency operation plan; the increased utilization of the North Dakota National Guard to provide protection and humanitarian aid; and a move to broaden the scope of the state’s preparedness, prevention and response plan to combat bio-terrorism.
“I’m honored to receive this award and thank the North Dakota Emergency Management Association for it,” Hoeven said. “The real award winners are the citizens of North Dakota, local and state officials, private organizations and businesses and our National Guard. All of use came together to protect our state and our people. We would not have been able to move as quickly as we did had it not been for the hard work and dedication of all North Dakotans.”
