Statement Of Governor John Hoeven In Response To The Dakota Resource Council
BISMARCK, N.D. - Governor John Hoeven today issued the following statement in response to a news release by the Dakota Resource Council:
"Remarks made by the Dakota Resource Council in a recent news release are ridiculous, purposely misleading and designed to create confusion in the public mind.
The North Dakota Department of Health has worked closely with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) on new air quality modeling analyses. We have already arranged to have public hearings where all the information and data - both state and federal - will be presented to the public and openly discussed.
It happened that the EPA was ready with some of their draft proposals before the state health department had completed its modeling data, so we asked the agency to release all of their information with us jointly. In fact, we are proposing to actually provide more information to the public in a far less confusing manner.
It is a fact that North Dakota is one of only 14 states that meets National Ambient Air Quality Standards. Our state’s air quality, moreover, is improving. Air quality in the North Unit of Theodore Roosevelt National Park has steadily improved since the early 1980s - based on actual, not modeled, monitoring data.
We are working to develop new power plants in our state, but we are committed, as I have long said, to doing it right, and that means taking good care of our air quality".
