Hoeven Congratulates North Dakota's Presidential Scholar Semifinalists

BISMARCK, N.D. - Governor Hoeven today offered congratulations to several students across North Dakota for their achievement in being selected as Presidential Scholar Semifinalists for the year 2002. The U.S. Department of Education, Commission on Presidential Scholars notified Hoeven of the North Dakota semifinalists selected from nearly 2.5 million graduating high school seniors.

Semifinalists from North Dakota include John R. Engelman, St. Mary’s Central High School, Bismarck; Jacquelyn R. Hanna, Lisbon High School, Lisbon; Melissa J. Hanson, Turtle-Lake-Mercer High School, Turtle Lake; Matthew K. Peterson, Central High School, Grand Forks; Kierann E. Smith, Wahpeton Senior High School, Wahpeton; and Kevin E. Stolt, Trinity High School, Dickinson.

“Students in North Dakota are among the best in the country,” Hoeven said. “These individuals have demonstrated tremendous academic and artistic success, leadership and community and school involvement.”

The United States Presidential Scholars Program was established in 1964, by an Executive Order of the President, to recognize and honor some of our nation’s most distinguished graduating seniors. In 1979, the program was expanded to recognize students who demonstrate exceptional scholarship and talent in the visual, creative and performing arts. Annually, up to 141 students are chosen to become Presidential Scholars, one of the nation’s highest honors for high school students.
