Local Public Health Units Awarded Funds For Tobacco Prevention And Control
BISMARCK, N.D. - The Community Health Grant Program Advisory Committee, an advisory body to the North Dakota Department of Health, today announced the awarding of $2,843,255 in grant funds to 16 local public health units for tobacco prevention and control efforts, according to Governor John Hoeven.
“Tobacco prevention efforts should begin where tobacco use begins - in our schools and communities,” said Hoeven. “I’m pleased to see these local health units are taking a creative lead in addressing one of North Dakota’s most serious - and preventable - health challenges.”
Local public health units that applied for the funding were required to develop school and community plans based upon the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Best Practices for Comprehensive Tobacco Control Programs. Plans from the following local public health units were approved:
- Grand Forks Public Health Department, $346,916
- Emmons County Public Health, $28,819
- Walsh County Health Department, $66,349
- Richland County Health Department, $99,008
- Wells County District Health Unit, $33,048

- First District Health Unit, $513,599
- Bismarck-Burleigh Public Health, $386,465
- City County Health Department, $60,174

“Tobacco use is the leading preventable cause of disease, disability and death in our state,” said Dr. Terry Dwelle, state health officer and Advisory Committee chairman. “These grants provide new opportunities for local communities to improve the health and wellness of the citizens of North Dakota.”
Funding for the community grants comes from the total amount awarded to North Dakota as a result of the master settlement agreement with tobacco companies. The Advisory Committee will consider additional applications at its next meeting May 23rd in Bismarck, N.D.
