Hoeven To Attend President's Signing Of The Public Health And Bioterrorism Preparedness And Response Act Of 2002
BISMARCK, N.D. - Governor John Hoeven will attend the signing of the Public Health and Bioterrorism Preparedness and Response Act of 2002 at 9 a.m. EDT on Wednesday, June 12th in the White House Rose Garden. The Governor was invited to attend the ceremony by President George W. Bush.
The bill, if fully funded by Congress, will provide North Dakota with $8.7 million for new investments in the state’s health infrastructure, notably in hospital bioterrorism preparedness. Key provisions of the new bill include funding for:
- Protecting the food supply
- Animal monitoring
- Potassium iodide for treatment of radiation exposure
- Advanced medical equipment for rural hospitals
- Hospital plans to accommodate over-capacities
North Dakota recently received $6.5 million from the Centers for Disease Control and the Health Resources and Services Administration to improve the state’s bioterrorism preparedness.
“Our last allocation represented the first phase of development in our comprehensive bioterrorism preparedness plan,” Hoeven said. “We involved a wide variety of organizations to assess our needs and develop a strategy. This newest allocation will enable us to expand that effort, especially with regard to strengthening our rural and urban hospitals.”
