Hoeven Announces $2.5 Million DOE Grant for Weatherization Program
BISMARCK, N.D. - Governor John Hoeven today announced that the U.S. Department of Energy has approved $2.5 million in Weatherization Assistance for needy North Dakotans. Under the program income eligible households may have their houses weatherized to increase the dwelling’s energy efficiency and improve residents’ health and safety. The Department of Commerce will administer the grant.
“Ensuring the comfort and safety of our elderly and people with disabilities is central to maintaining and improving our quality of life in North Dakota,” Hoeven said. “We’re building our future in North Dakota in ways that protect the most vulnerable among us.”
The program, which works closely with the state’s Fuel Assistance Program, prioritizes services to the elderly, people with disabilities and families with small children. It requires that the energy saved by the installed conservation measures is greater than the cost of the materials and labor for installation.
Professionally trained weatherization crews employed by local community action agencies use computerized energy audits and advanced diagnostic equipment to identify energy-saving strategies for single-family, multi-family and mobile homes. Typical weatherization measures installed include, but are not limited to, installation of attic and wall insulation, reduction of air leaks, furnace repair and duct sealing.
Last year approximately 1,200 households receive the benefits from the Weatherization Program and saved on average $218 each.
“Comfort and safety help to make a house a home,” Hoeven said. “Our weatherization program is one way we’re building our future in North Dakota for all of our citizens.”
