Hoeven Announces Orange Alert Status
BISMARCK, N.D. - Governor John Hoeven today asked the state Division of Emergency Management, National Guard, Highway Patrol, law enforcement and emergency personnel throughout North Dakota to move to Code Orange, a heightened state of alert. The nation has five levels of alert - orange is just below red, the highest state of alert.
The move comes after President Bush moved the nation to Code Orange. According to the White House, the President’s alert is not due to any verified, credible domestic threat, but is rather the result of patterns of activity being seen overseas, particularly in Southeast Asia. No state or region of the country is at greater risk.
“We have not received a local threat,” Hoeven said. “We are adopting a heightened level of alert as a precaution, in response to the President’s national alert.”
The Governor directed that the following measures be taken:
- The Governor has activated the state’s Emergency Operation Center.
- The Governor has directed law enforcement personnel, the National Guard and emergency managers to provide him with regularly scheduled updates.
- Emergency personnel and law enforcement have been directed to review and activate emergency prevention and response plans.
- The public is advised to adopt a heightened sense of alertness, to report suspicious activity and to be cautious of unusual packages.
- All state employees, schools and colleges are advised that the state is on Code Orange and to implement local alert plans.
- All state employees, schools and colleges are encouraged to report suspicious incidents and be cautious of unusual packages.
Wednesday’s September 11 Commemoration will take place as scheduled, with enhanced security.
