BISMARCK, N.D. - Governor John Hoeven announced today that the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the United States Fire Administration (USFA) have released $205,091 in fire operations and firefighter safety grant funds to several rural North Dakota communities through the 2002 Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program.
The award recipients for North Dakota are:
- Portland Fire Protection District: $39,998
- Northwood Fire Protection District: $39,974
- Bottineau Fire Department: $21,600
- Mapleton Fire Department: $68,555

“These funds will help assist our firefighters in meeting operational demands and in helping ensure the safety of our communities,” Hoeven said.
The Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program is designed as a cooperation effort between FEMA and the U.S. Congress to enhance basic fire service delivery across the United States. More than 5,000 departments will receive over $360 million to support fire protection, Emergency Medical Services delivery, vehicle purchase and prevention programs in 2002.
USFA, part of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, serves the American public and the nation’s fire services through training, data collection and analysis, public fire education and fire protection technology research.
