Hoeven Honors State Employees

BISMARCK, N.D. - Governor John Hoeven today honored several employees with the Governor’s Award for Excellence in Public Service. The award is given annually during State Employee Recognition Week to recipients, nominated by their peers, who excel in public service.

Karon Steckler of Jamestown is the Volunteer Services Coordinator for the North Dakota State Hospital. Steckler has been with the Volunteer Department for more than 22 years, and has served as coordinator since 1995. In the past year, Steckler has independently organized 4,643 volunteer hours donated by 271 volunteers; secured $95,648 in donations through cash, discounts, new and used merchandise; and designed and established a clothing acquisition area for patients where the community can donate usable clothing and other items. This program has saved the department thousands of dollars in clothing and other needs for the patients. Steckler is regarded by her co-workers as a valuable, positive influence, helping people become viable members of their communities. Steckler also is involved in many community programs.

Dan Schelske, Jr. of Bismarck is the Recreation Planner/Grants Manager for the North Dakota Parks and Recreation Department. Schelske is a 20-year veteran of Parks and Recreation. Schelske provided first-hand assistance in obtaining North Dakota’s first National Scenic By-Way. He served as state by-way coordinator and edited the National Scenic By-Way application. According to co-workers, Schelske has launched new initiatives and taken on new projects that utilize technology and save the department money, including a project to revise and computerize grant applications to improve customer service. Schelske serves as a volunteer for numerous organizations in the community, and has served on the State/Federal Fire Support Task Force, providing wildfire support recently in his role as a firefighter.

Marget (Maggie) Anderson of Bismarck is the Assistant Director of Child Nutrition Programs for the Department of Public Instruction (DPI). Anderson has served as assistant director since 1994, and has worked with DPI since 1989. Anderson recently designed and implemented a web-based computer system for the management and administration of the USDA programs administered by DPI, while successfully managing and carrying out her regular program and administrative responsibilities. Highly regarded by her co-workers, they say Anderson works, “over and above the call of duty, finds balance, and manages her time extremely well.” Anderson volunteers in numerous community organizations, furthering her commitment to integrity and customer service, as noted by her fellow employees.

Lucinda (Cindy) Moos of Bismarck is the Technology Solutions Supervisor/ Customer Support Center Supervisor for Job Service North Dakota. Moos has worked for Job Service since 1973, serving in her current position since September 1 of this year. Moos played a vital role in JSND with the state’s development of the “Employee Suggestion Incentive Program.” She coordinated ideas and responses within the department, and lead in the creation of the underlining infrastructure of the program for the state implementation. Co-workers describe Moos: “Her excellent work, her continued growth, learning and development exemplify excellence in public service. She demonstrates the highest degree of professionalism, efficiency and integrity.” Moos is involved in numerous organizations on the community, state and national levels.
