Statement Of Governor John Hoeven On The ITC Finding Of Injury To American Farmers

Hoeven Pushes U.S. Department of Commerce, Trade Representative for Action on Canadian Wheat Board

BISMARCK, N.D. - Governor John Hoeven today issued the following statement in response to the U.S. International Trade Commission’s (ITC) finding of material injury to American wheat growers by the Canadian wheat imports:

“The U.S. International Trade Commission today determined what we in North Dakota have known all along: the Canadian Wheat Board’s (CWB) monopolistic trade practices hurt American farmers.

“The U.S. Department of Commerce (DOC) must now move forward decisively with a countervailing duty determination. That should be in place within the first quarter of next year. Further, the DOC must press on with its antidumping determination, and should impose sanctions by midyear.

“It is equally important that U.S. Trade Representative Robert Zoellick vigorously press forward against the CWB in the World Trade Organization. The United States needs to send a very strong message to Canada and the world: American farmers need not only free trade, but also fair trade.”
