Hoeven Announces Wind Energy Project In Cooperation With University System And State Department Of Commerce
BISMARCK, N.D. - Gov. John Hoeven today announced a plan by four University of North Dakota campuses, in cooperation with the state Commerce Department's Division of Community Services (DCS), to purchase or produce wind energy for the campuses and implement a wind energy training program for technicians.
"This is just the kind of project our Smart Growth initiative is working to foster - a partnership between education and industry to stimulate economic development in one of our targeted industry sectors, in this case, energy, to create good paying jobs," Hoeven said. "Our Division of Community Services has been working hard to get this project started."
Bismarck State College, North Dakota State College of Science, North Dakota State University, and the University of North Dakota have issued a Request for Proposals (RFP) to study the feasibility of building wind turbines on or near the campuses, or purchasing energy from an existing wind energy facility. The study will also examine the environmental impact of the project, and the potential to integrate it into the colleges' curricula, offering a wind power technician program similar to the Power Plant program currently offered at Bismarck State College.
The study or studies will be funded by the DCS. Responses to the RFP are due at the end of February.
