Hoeven Announces Schafer New Civilian Aide To Army Secretary

BISMARCK, N.D. - Governor John Hoeven today announced that former Gov. Ed Schafer has been named the new North Dakota Civilian Aide to the Secretary of the Army Thomas E. White. Hoeven nominated Schafer for the position last fall. The former governor follows in the footsteps of his late father, Harold Schafer, who held the same position.

“Ed will bring the same kind of quality service to the Secretary as he has to North Dakota,” Hoeven said. “We’re delighted that he’s been selected, and delighted he accepted.”

Civilian Aides serve as advisors, spokespersons and advocates for the Army issues. They explain Army programs, positions and problems to other key local, state and national leaders through personal contacts and correspondences, and to the public through statements, appearances and speeches. Currently, 91 Civilian Aides serve within the United States and its territories. They serve at the discretion of the Secretary and are afforded the protocol of a three-star flag officer.
