Hoeven Signs Bill To Expand Hunting Access
Governor Says One Million Acres Targeted For 2009
BISMARCK, N.D. - Gov. John Hoeven Monday signed House Bill 1358, which commits $3.3 million to making more public land accessible to hunters.
Hoeven has been strongly committed to expanding access to quality hunting land. HB1358 advances a plan he announced last year and enables the state to build one million acres of access by 2009.
“Today, we take a big step forward in our commitment to produce a quality hunting experience for all North Dakotans,” Hoeven said.
Last March, Hoeven announced his plan to raise the amount of non-fee hunting land from 165,000 acres to an initial goal of 500,000 acres through a state program called PLOTS (Private Land Open to Sportsmen). In less than a year, the PLOTS program has reached the 300,000 acre mark, well ahead of schedule. The program benefits hunters by creating additional habitat, and landowners by providing an additional source of income.
“This legislation will expand the quality hunting land available to our sportsmen,” Hoeven said. “It brings us closer to our goal of one million acres of hunting access and produces additional prospects for income for landowners. It’s a win-win solution.”
