Hoeven Requests Presidential Disaster Declaration
BISMARCK, N.D. - Gov. John Hoeven today requested a presidential disaster declaration for damage to Rural Electric Cooperatives (REC) in Cass and Barnes counties resulting from severe summer storms and high winds on June 24-25, 2003.
"The RECs provide essential services to rural residents and agricultural related businesses in North Dakota,” Hoeven said. “The loss of power to homes, ranches, and livestock producers can be devastating and costly. We need to secure assistance in a timely fashion."
The request is the result of a Preliminary Damage Assessment (PDA) conducted by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the North Dakota Division of Emergency Management (NDDEM) and local representatives from the RECs.
Severe summer storms and high winds in Cass and Barnes Counties on June 24-25, 2003, caused approximately 1.5 million dollars in damages to electric transmission lines, power poles, towers and transformers.
The disaster declaration requests Public Assistance and Hazard Mitigation.
