Hoeven Launches Rocketry Challenge In North Dakota

BISMARCK, N.D. - Gov. John Hoeven is encouraging high school students across the state to participate in the “2004 Team America Rocketry Challenge.” The 2003 event attracted over 9,000 students representing every state in the country with awards totaling over $50,000 to the winning teams.

“I encourage students from across the state to participate in this outstanding learning opportunity,” Hoeven said. “Competitive educational programs like Rocketry Challenge help students to learn more about aerospace, and to explore potential career opportunities."

Students are challenged to design, build and fly a multi-stage model rocket carrying two raw eggs and an electronic altimeter at 1,500 feet. A fly-off competition for the top 100 teams will be held in Northern Virginia in May 2004, with the top five teams sharing a prize pool of approximately $50,000 in savings bonds, and their supervising teachers’ departments sharing $9,000 in cash.

The Challenge is a national competition, sponsored by the Aerospace Industries Association (AIA) and the National Association of Rocketry. More information about the Challenge is posted on the AIA website at www.aia-aerospace.org or www.rocketcontest.org.
