Hoeven Announces $963,592 Disaster Assistance For Barnes County
BISMARCK, N.D. - Gov. John Hoeven today announced that the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has approved $963,592 for the repair of rural electrical service in Barnes County impacted by severe storms and high winds June 24-25.
“This funding for Barnes County is welcome news,” Hoeven said. “I was pleased with the quick response that we received from the White House and FEMA.”
On August 1, 2003 President Bush declared a major disaster in North Dakota to make supplementary federal assistance available to the state. The amount of assistance represents the 75 percent federal share of the project’s estimated $1,248,794 cost.
The work completed consisted of removing dozens of destroyed aluminum electric transmission towers from several sites and installing new stronger structures. A damaged power conductor was also repaired and re-installed. The line was returned to service July 13.
The grants were made under FEMA’s Public Assistance Program, which provides grants for the repair or restoration of disaster-damaged public facilities. The program is administered by the state under the new State Managed Disaster initiative.
