Hoeven Invites North Dakotans To September 11 Memorial At International Peace Garden
BISMARCK, N.D. - Governor John Hoeven is inviting North Dakotans to attend the September 11th memorial at the International Peace Garden. Joining Hoeven at the memorial service will be First Lady Mikey Hoeven, Deputy Prime Minister John Manley, Manitoba Premier Gary Doer, U.S. Ambassador Paul Cellucci, and U.S. Consul General Todd Swartz.
The Peace Garden is one of the few locations that has remnants of the World Trade Center. A memorial to victims of September 11 has been created out of the ten twisted steel girders now located at the garden.
“Our International Peace Garden symbolizes the spirit of unity for peace and prosperity,” said Hoeven. “We will never forget those who died on September 11 or the individuals who inspired us with their acts of heroism. As we gather to commemorate the victims, we also commit ourselves to honoring them by seeking peace and justice in the world and security at home.”
The memorial will begin at 11 a.m. on September 11 at the site of the 9/11 Memorial Cairn at the Peace Garden. An honor guard comprised of fire fighters from North Dakota and Manitoba will lead a march from the peace chapel to the memorial site, and school choirs from North Dakota and Manitoba will sing their respective national anthems.
Straddling the border between North Dakota and Manitoba, The International Peace Garden was officially dedicated on July 14, 1932 as a symbol of the long and peaceful relationship between the United States and Canada. Admission to the garden will be waived on September 11.
