BISMARCK, N.D. - Governor John Hoeven today, in keeping with President George W. Bush’s national proclamation, has designated September 11, 2003, Patriot Day in North Dakota. The Governor has accordingly directed that the flags of the United States and North Dakota be flown at half-staff from sunrise on September 11, 2003, until sunset on September 11, 2003.
“Patriot Day is a day to come together for reflection and to honor the victims of the September 11 attacks and their families,” Hoeven said. “On that day our nation stood strong, from the heroic first responders to the outpouring of volunteer support all across the country.”
The Governor called on citizens in cities, towns, and communities throughout North Dakota to observe a moment of silence at 9:03 a.m. CT (10:03 ET) the hour at which the last of the hijacked planes crashed in a Pennsylvania field.
Hoeven will mark the anniversary of the September 11 attacks on Thursday, September 11, 2003, with a memorial service at the International Peace Garden. U.S. Ambassador to Canada Paul Cellucci, Canadian Prime Minister John Manley, and Manitoba Premier Gary Doer will also be in attendance.
