Statement Of Governor John Hoeven On Thursday's School Bus Accident Near Minot
BISMARCK, N.D. - Governor John Hoeven today issued the following statement in response to the accident south of Minot Thursday involving an elementary school bus and a semitrailer truck:
“Mikey and I extend our sympathy to the three youngsters who were injured in yesterday’s bus accident, and their families. Our hearts go out in particular to the youngster who is hospitalized in critical condition, as well as the youngster’s family. As parents, we understand your hardship, and our thoughts and prayers are with you during the difficult period of recovery. We also express our condolences to the family of the bus driver who lost his life in the accident.
I would also like to thank all those who rendered assistance at the scene, especially Marc Beyer, a Coca Cola Company employee, who happened on the scene and assisted in rescuing the children. All North Dakotans honor and appreciate the spirit of charity of all those who helped under tragic circumstance.
Although it has been 16 years since our last fatality involving an occupant of a school bus, we can’t emphasize enough the importance of highway traffic safety in general, and especially when our most precious passengers, our children, are involved.
I have directed the Highway Patrol to continue to work with the families to provide information and any assistance available throughout their ordeal."
