Hoeven Announces $1 Million Federal Grant For Establishment Of NDSU Beef Center Of Excellence
BISMARCK, N.D. - Gov. John Hoeven today announced that the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) office of Rural Development has awarded a $1 million grant to establish a Beef Systems Science Center of Excellence at North Dakota State University (NDSU).
The Beef Systems Science Center is part of Hoeven’s Centers of Excellence initiative, introduced during the 2003 Legislative Session. The state of North Dakota is providing $800,000 in funding to leverage the federal grant funds.
“The Centers of Excellence Initiative is a tool to promote research development at our universities, and link students to higher paying jobs,” Hoeven said. “With over one million head of feeder cattle produced every year in North Dakota, I believe that Beef Systems Science Center of Excellence will be a great benefit to NDSU and to the State of North Dakota.”
“I am confident in the NDSU Animal Science Department’s ability to coordinate research, education and adding value to North Dakota livestock,” Clare Carlson, North Dakota Director of USDA Rural Development said. “This is another way that USDA is working to improve the quality of life and economy of rural North Dakota.”
Last legislative session, Hoeven signed Senate Bill 2334, which authorized the Beef Science Systems Center to create a model for the development of an integrated meat processing industry; enhance NDSU’s ability to conduct research in beef sciences; and provide training, education and outreach opportunities to students, businesses and beef cattle producers.
The North Dakota Association of Rural Electric Cooperatives is coordinating the creation of the Beef System Science Center of Excellence with NDSU, the North Dakota Stockman’s Association and the several state farm organizations.
