Hoeven Ties R&D Efforts To Job Creation
Commerce Department Hires New Economy Strategies To Steer Planning

BISMARCK, N.D. - Gov. John Hoeven today said the state’s Centers of Excellence and the Red River Valley Research Corridor initiatives are stimulating technology commercialization, new business formation and job growth in the state. The next step is to make sure our efforts are well coordinated and leveraged between our Commerce Department, the university system and the private sector, according to Hoeven.

To do that, the Governor Wednesday brought together representatives of the North Dakota University System, private sector business leaders and technology-focused economic development interests. The group is working collaboratively to identify strategies that will accelerate the linking and leveraging of state, federal, university and industry research and development dollars, and private-sector investments and philanthropic gifts.

Richard Seline, principal and founder of Washington, D.C. based New Economy Strategies (NES), led the innovative meeting at the Microsoft Business Solutions Campus in Fargo. New Economy Strategies is an implementation firm focused on developing state economies based on the formation and growth of technology groups. Working with community, academic and entrepreneurial leadership, NES utilizes a three-pronged approach in regional engagements:

  • First, NES works with states in assessing their current resources to maximize innovation around technology areas.
  • Second, NES nurtures and builds a strategy around the state’s strengths.
  • Third, NES identifies steps to coordinate, leverage and commercialize research and development efforts, thereby creating sustainable jobs and wealth for citizens.

“Alien Technology is a good example of how all the interests can work together, creating higher-paying jobs and greater opportunities for North Dakotans,” Hoeven said. “Today, we’re ensuring that our Commerce Department, University System and the private sector are moving forward in coordinating, leveraging and commercializing our research and development efforts.”
