Hoeven: Flood Plain Remapping, Dikes Project To Be Coordinated
BISMARCK, N.D. - Governor John Hoeven today said he has been working with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to coordinate completion of the Grand Forks Dike project with the city’s remapping project. By coordinating the two efforts, the new flood plain map will reflect flood control measures in place and save homeowners and businesses on flood insurance costs.
Hoeven has been working with FEMA Region VIII Director David I. Maurstad to ensure FEMA’s remapping and timeliness match dike construction progress. FEMA’s Mitigation Division manages the National Flood Insurance Program. The coordination could save Grand Forks residents and businesses more than $12 million in annual flood insurance premiums.
“The challenge of rebuilding after a flood is often compounded by higher insurance premiums or a requirement to carry flood insurance for years afterwards,” Hoeven said. “As a consequence of our working with FEMA, residents and businesses will save on premium costs and some may not be required to carry flood insurance at all.”
Hoeven indicated that FEMA officials will be coming to Grand Forks to meet with city leaders in the next several weeks to go through remapping plans and timelines.
