Hoeven Directs State Agencies To Assist In Fort Yates Water Supply Shortage
BISMARCK, N.D. - Gov. John Hoeven today directed Division of Emergency Management Director Doug Friez to activate the State Operation Center (SOC) and contact Chairman Charles Murphy of the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation in response to a critical water shortage at Fort Yates.
“I have asked all appropriate state agencies to render assistance as needed, and to stand ready to provide additional assistance through the night,” Hoeven said.
The community’s water supply has been constricted due to a clogged filter at the water intake in Lake Oahe. The federal Bureau of Reclamation is establishing a supplemental overland water supply to meet community’s immediate needs until divers can evaluate the problem and attempt to clear the obstruction on Tuesday.
To assist, Hoeven has directed the state Department of Transportation to deploy two, 6,000-gallon trucks with non-drinkable water to the scene to provide water for hot water heating systems. He has also directed State Health Officer Dr. Terry Dwelle to work with tribal health officials to ensure the health safety of residents, as well as their drinking water supply.
In accordance with the Governor’s directive, the State Operations Center will remain activated throughout the night. Friez will follow-up and work with tribal authorities and continue to provide assistance as needed.
