First Lady Mikey Hoeven to Lead Reading Initiative in North Dakota
BISMARCK, N.D. - First Lady Mikey Hoeven will lead a statewide celebration of reading tomorrow as part of the fifth annual "Scholastic Read for 2004" global classroom reading initiative. As North Dakota's ambassador of reading, the First Lady will encourage all children, teachers and parents to take time during the day to read a book.
The First Lady will read to the second grade classes at Longfellow Elementary School in Fargo tomorrow at noon. As
part of this initiative, the First Lady will donate 50 books to an elementary school in each of North Dakota's
eight regions, and 100 books to the Longfellow Elementary School's library.
"Scholastic Read for 2004 is a great way to promote literacy throughout North Dakota," First Lady Hoeven
said. "Reading helps build better lives and children across the state deserve to experience the joy of reading a
book."
Joining First Lady Mikey Hoeven in the "Read For 2004" reading celebration are gubernatorial first spouses in states across the country. Last year, the "Read for 2003" initiative proved to be a huge success, with 31 first spouses, and more than 27,000 classrooms and 5 million students in over 60 countries worldwide participating.
