Statement Of Gov. John Hoeven On The Deaths Of Staff Sgt. Kenneth W. Hendrickson And Sgt. Keith L. Smette

BISMARCK, N.D. - Gov. John Hoeven today issued the following statement in response to the deaths of Staff Sgt. Kenneth W. Hendrickson of Bismarck and Sgt. Keith L. Smette of Makoti, who died in the service of their country early Saturday morning in Iraq. Both men served in the 957th Multi-Role Bridge Company, Bismarck, N.D.

“Mikey and I are joined by all North Dakotans today in mourning the loss of two brave sons of North Dakota, Staff Sgt. Kenneth W. Hendrickson and Sgt. Keith L. Smette, who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country in Iraq on Saturday. These brave soldiers will be remembered for their courage and devotion to duty. We extend our deepest sympathy to their families, and we want them to know that our state and nation grieve with them.

“Our soldiers in Iraq and elsewhere overseas live and work in an environment of danger to secure our peace and defend our liberties. We are very proud of them. As we grieve and pray for Kenneth and Keith, our thoughts and prayers continue to be with the men and women of our National Guard, Reserves and active duty military who have been called to serve and who are still in harm's way.”
