Governor Hoeven Takes Charge Of NGA Health Committee
WASHINGTON, D.C. - The National Governors Association has announced the leadership of its Health and Human Services Committee. North Dakota Governor John Hoeven has been named chair of the committee, which seeks to heighten awareness of and advocate state health care issues on Capitol Hill. Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm has been named vice chair.
The Health and Human Services Committee is one of NGA's four standing committees. Its jurisdiction covers health care issues such as Medicaid, Medicare, S-CHIP, Association Health Plans (AHPs), and prescription drugs and human services issues such as welfare reform (TANF), child care, child welfare, child support and food stamps. In addition, the committee also oversees issues such as criminal and juvenile justice and public safety; military, veterans affairs and the National Guard; immigration, refugee and border security issues; and emergency management and disaster services.
Governors serving on the committee include the following: North Dakota Governor John Hoeven-Chair, Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm-Vice Chair, Indiana Governor Joseph E. Kernan, Kentucky Governor Ernie Fletcher, Maryland Governor Robert L. Ehrlich Jr., Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney, Nevada Governor Kenny Guinn, Northern Mariana Islands Governor Juan Babauta, Ohio Governor Bob Taft, Oregon Governor Ted Kulongoski, Puerto Rico Governor Sila M. Calderon, Tennessee Governor Phil Bredesen, and Virgin Islands Governor Charles W. Turnbull.
