Hoeven: Zoellick's Appeal Of WTO Ruling On Wheat The Right Decision
BISMARCK, N.D. - Gov. John Hoeven today said he is pleased that U.S. Trade Representative Robert Zoellick has decided to appeal a World Trade Organization (WTO) ruling on the Canadian Wheat Board (CWB). Hoeven urged Zoellick to challenge the ruling in a letter two weeks ago, and recently in a telephone call to U.S. Trade Ambassador Alan Johnson.
“It’s clear that the Canadian Wheat Board runs its export operations in a way that violates international commercial standards, and I commend the ambassador for continuing to push the issue,” Hoeven said. “In order to maintain its credibility, the WTO must monitor international trade practices fairly, and that means strictly enforcing violation of the rules. We need to send a very strong message to Canada and the world: American farmers must be treated fairly in the world market.”
