Statement Of Governor John Hoeven On The Death Of President Ronald Wilson Reagan
Governor Directs Flags Be Flown At Half Staff For Thirty Days
BISMARCK, N.D. - In honor of President Ronald Wilson Reagan, the 40th president of the United States of American, who died today, Gov. John Hoeven has directed all state and federal flags in North Dakota to be flown at half-staff, beginning Saturday, June 5, 2004.
The Governor also issued the following statement:
“President Ronald Reagan made us believe in ourselves and the enormous potential of our country, instilling in us a faith and optimism that, together, we could do great things.
“President Reagan reinvigorated our military and restored respect for America among our allies and our foes alike. When many in the world, and some in our own nation, were resigned to living in a world half darkened by Communism, President Reagan brought to bear the light of a free people. Within a decade of his election in 1980, the Cold War had ended and the oppressed peoples of Eastern Europe saw the dawn of liberty.
“His achievements at home were equally great. When our economy was floundering, and government was growing unchecked, he affirmed his belief that government should work for the people. His tax cuts and the economic policies he promoted in the 1980s laid the foundation for the economic growth and productivity that is still at work in America today.
“Optimistic, courageous and visionary, President Reagan’s life and leadership were a fulfillment of the great goal he set for his administration: to restore ‘the great, confident roar of American progress and growth and optimism.’”
