Dalrymple To Tour Infrastructure, Crop Damage In Northern North Dakota
BISMARCK, N.D. - Lt. Gov. Jack Dalrymple will meet with local officials and tour parts of Ward, Burke, Renville and Bottineau counties on Tuesday, June 15, to assess damage to infrastructure and crop plantings in the aftermath of several severe storms in the region. Joining Dalrymple will be Doug Friez, director of the Division of Emergency Management.
“We can’t lose sight of the fact that storm damage has occurred not only to infrastructure like roads and bridges, but also to crops,” Dalrymple said. “We need to talk to farmers and get an accurate assessment of what their needs are so that we can approach the proper federal agencies for assistance.”
Dalrymple will arrive at the Kenmare Airport at 11 a.m. and tour the Bowbells, Mohall and Bottineau areas by ground. Media are invited to follow the tour, which will proceed from the airport at 11:05 a.m. The tour will arrive in Bowbells around 11:30 a.m., Mohall around 12:40 p.m. and end in Bottineau around 3:30 p.m. Reporters can contact Lance Gaebe at 391-5571 before or during the event to coordinate interviews on the ground.
Gov. John Hoeven last week announced that six additional counties would be added to the 10 counties and one Indian reservation currently included in a presidential disaster declaration he requested last spring. That action has made about $2.5 million available to the additional six counties.
In addition, Hoeven has requested that the U.S. Department of Agriculture do an agriculture damage assessment for all North Dakota counties. The assessment is the first step in securing a secretarial disaster declaration for producers.
At Governor Hoeven’s request, President Bush declared 10 North Dakota counties and the Spirit Lake Indian Reservation a major disaster as a result of flooding that began March 29. Counties included as part of the disaster declaration are Benson, Cavalier, Grand Forks, Griggs, Nelson, Pembina, Ramsey, Steele, Traill and Walsh. On June 9, the declaration was amended to include Bottineau, Burke, Mountrail, Renville, Towner, and Ward counties.
