Hoeven Issues Statewide Request
BISMARCK, N.D. - Gov. John Hoeven today logged onto www.mlb.com and cast his vote for Travis Hafner, a native of Sykeston, North Dakota, for the 32nd roster spot on the American League All-Star Team. Hafner - or the Pronk, as fans know him - is a designated hitter and first baseman for the Cleveland Indians.
The first thirty-one players of each team are selected by their respective leagues, but the 32nd player for each is selected by fans in an online vote. The Governor urged all North Dakotans to log on and cast a vote for Hafner.
Hafner is a left-handed slugger batting .304 with nine home runs and 49 RBIs. He was tied for third place in the American League with 25 doubles and ranked sixth with a .403 on-base percentage. Hafner has no errors for 90 plays at first base.
"Travis is a native son of North Dakota, and he's batting with the best of them in the major leagues," Hoeven said. "He's already a North Dakota All-Star, so let's make him an American League All-Star, too."
Balloting for the Ameriquest All-Star Final Vote is now underway and continues at www.mlb.com through 7 p.m. CT on Wednesday. Last year, about 10.6 million votes were cast for fan favorites in both major leagues.
