Hoeven Directs No-Mow Areas On Highways Opened For Haying

BISMARCK, N.D. - Gov. John Hoeven today directed that all “no-mow” areas on the state highway system be opened for mowing beginning Thursday, July 15. The drought-induced shortage of livestock feed and pastures, especially in western and south central North Dakota, constitute an emergency, according to Hoeven.

In addition, Hoeven has asked the North Dakota Department of Transportation to issue a letter modifying the following regulations for moving hay on state highways.

  • On state routes with a maximum vehicle length of 75 feet, the maximum will be increased to 95 feet for moving hay.
  • On state routes posted at 80,000 pounds gross vehicle weight, the maximum will be increased to 105,000 pounds for moving hay. All axles must be within legal limits.

“While heavy rain is causing problems for farmers in the eastern part of the state, ranch owners in western and south central North Dakota are also enduring weather related hardship,” Hoeven said. “Lifting the ‘no-mow’ ban and modifying the regulations for moving hay on state highways will increase the total livestock feed available in the state.”

Hoeven encouraged landowners adjacent to “no-mow” areas to make cooperative agreements to ensure that ranch owners suffering from drought conditions get the hay they need.
