State Quarter Commission Reviews Citizen Suggestions

BISMARCK, N.D. - The North Dakota Quarter Design Selection Process Commission, chaired by Lt. Governor Jack Dalrymple, met today to evaluate nearly 400 suggestions received from interested citizens on designing the state quarter. The North Dakota State commemorative quarter will be issued in 2006 as part of the 50 State Quarters Program.

According to Dalrymple, the suggestions varied from depicting North Dakota’s history and geography to the rich diversity of the state’s heritage. “Through a strong team effort and with input from citizens we are working to develop a design that will help build awareness and create a positive image for North Dakota,” Dalrymple said.

The commission grouped the public suggestions into five concepts representative of North Dakota: agriculture, landscape, International Peace Gardens, Badlands and Native American culture.

“Further work by the Commission is necessary to develop these concepts into a narrative form explaining why each concept is emblematic of North Dakota,” said Dalrymple. “Our goal is to finalize the narratives by mid-August.”

Based on the narratives, the United States Mint will produce original artwork of the concepts, focusing on aesthetic beauty, historical accuracy, appropriateness and coinability. From the artwork designed by the U.S. Mint, the Commission will recommend the final design for approval by the Secretary of Treasury.

“It is important that we continue our team effort in making our recommendation on the final design,” said Dalrymple. “On behalf of Governor Hoeven and the Commission members, we want to thank everyone who submitted suggestions. Public input is essential to the process and we appreciate the contribution our citizens have made in helping design a quarter of which North Dakota can be proud.”

The 50 State Quarters Program Commission members include: Lt. Governor Jack Dalrymple, Secretary of State Al Jaeger, North Dakota Historical Society Director Merl Paaverud, Senator Karen Krebsbach, Representative Nancy Johnson, Tourism Director Sara Otte-Coleman, United Tribes Technical College President David Gipp, North Dakota Council on the Arts Board Administrator Jan Webb, and public member at large Dina Butcher.
