Hoeven Arranges State-Federal Meeting On Roads As Dikes In Devils Lake
BISMARCK, N.D. - Gov. John Hoeven today announced that he has arranged a meeting to bring together state and federal officials to address the issue of roads as dikes in the Devils Lake region. Some of the area’s roads have been raised and are functioning as dikes for high water, although they were not engineered for that purpose. Hoeven is pressing for federal assistance for a more durable solution for the people in the Devils Lake Basin and Fort Totten.
Hoeven has asked Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) officials to meet on Wednesday morning, August 11, via teleconference with representatives from a range of federal and state agencies.
“We are bringing together various agencies with the engineering and administrative expertise to tackle this issue head on in a permanent way,” Hoeven said. “We need a durable solution to this issue, so that the people of the Devils Lake region don’t find themselves confronting it year after year.”
In addition to FEMA, the Army Corps of Engineers, Federal Highway Administration and Bureau of Indian Affairs will participate in the meeting for the federal government. Representing the state will be the N.D. Department of Transportation, Division of Emergency Management and Water Commission.
The state’s congressional delegation and representatives of the Spirit Lake Nation have also been invited to participate.
