First Lady Supports Efforts To Raise Funds For Childgood Drinking Prevention

BISMARCK, N.D. - First Lady Mikey Hoeven today announced her support for a Senate bill that would create a postage stamp to raise funds for childhood drinking prevention and education. The bill, introduced by Senators Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-TX) and Barbara Mikulski (D-MD), would authorize the first-ever childhood drinking prevention stamp to increase awareness and raise money to address this growing problem.

“The new stamp will raise awareness about the dangers associated with alcohol use by children, and fund important prevention and education programs,” Hoeven said. “It has the potential to make an enormous difference.”

According to Hoeven, childhood drinking is a serious problem nationwide, with two in five ninth graders saying they had an alcoholic drink before age 13, and more than one in five eighth graders admitting to being drunk at least once. The Leadership to Keep Children Alcohol Free, a bipartisan group of more than 30 gubernatorial spouses, including Hoeven, is working to address this critical issue and supports the efforts to establish a postage stamp.

“I join governors’ spouses all across the country, and the Leadership to Keep Children Alcohol Free, in urging every member of Congress to support this bill and take a stand against childhood drinking,” Hoeven said. “This effort can have a real impact on our children’s futures.”
