Hoeven: U.S. Army Corps Approves Parshall Water Supply Extension

BISMARCK, N.D. - Gov. John Hoeven today announced that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has approved an estimated $1.5 million project that would extend the community of Parshall's water supply line. The project entails extending the existing water line nearly 4,000 feet to a low point of 1,793 feet mean sea level in a channel within the Van Hook Arm of the lake. That is 23 feet below the lake's current level of 1,816 feet.

In addition, the Corps will add new, heavier duty pumps to accommodate the greater length of the line and lift requirements. Upon completion, the water system will be turned over to the city of Parshall for maintenance and operation.

"We will continue to push the Corps to maintain stable and adequate lake levels on both Sakakawea and Oahe," Hoeven said. "We credit Corps' diligence in ensuring that the water supply to the homes and businesses in this community is preserved."

Hoeven declared a drought emergency for Parshall on November 7, 2003. He said the state continues to press the Corps to step up and manage levels with consideration of the water intakes like Parshall and Garrison.

The governor also brought Chief Brig. General William T. Grisoli with the Corps' Northwestern Division to Parshall last fall to witness firsthand the impact of low water levels on communities dependent on Lakes Sakakawea and Oahe for their water supplies.
