Hoeven Meets With Northeastern Area Farmers On Crop Losses
BISMARCK, N.D. - Gov. John Hoeven today toured farmland in Pembina and Cavalier counties to assess damage to crops in northeastern North Dakota from frost and cool weather. Following the tour, the Governor met with farmers at the farmstead of Randy and Bonnie Carignan near Walhalla.
“We’ve had reports of frost damage from the Red River Valley across the northern tier of the state, and as far south as Emmons County in south central North Dakota,” Hoeven said. “This has been a hard year for farmers, with drought in the southwest and flooding in the northeast. Considering all this, until now crops were making progress, but this recent frost has been a real blow to producers.”
Hoeven said the exact extent of the damage won’t be known for a while. Crop insurance will cover some of the yield losses, but he said federal disaster aid is needed. Hoeven is working with other Midwestern and Western governors, as well as the state’s congressional delegation, to advance disaster aid legislation in Washington.
