Hoeven Announces Preparedness Grant For North Dakota State University
BISMARCK, N.D. - Gov. John Hoeven today announced that North Dakota State University (NDSU) has been awarded a $100,000 grant from the Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to assist the university with its continued planning and training for emergency preparedness.
The grant was awarded through FEMA’s Disaster Resistant University (DRU) initiative, created to help the nation’s colleges and universities identify hazard vulnerabilities and assess risks in order to protect their students, faculty, staff, research facilities and property. The program’s focus is to reduce the potential for loss of life and billions of dollars in damage.
“This funding will help NDSU and our overall coordinated homeland security efforts from border security initiatives to individual preparedness for potential disasters,” Hoeven said. “I commend the cooperative efforts between NDSU and the Division of Emergency Management in securing these funds.”
NDSU’s proposal for the grant consists primarily of mitigation planning and personnel development. Emergency management faculty, Dr. Arthur Oyola-Yemaiel and Dr. Jennifer Wilson, will supervise a two-year, mitigation-planning project.
In addition to this initial grant, NDSU is now eligible to receive more funding through the DRU program to further its preparedness efforts.
