Hoeven Announces Preparedness Grant For Sitting Bull College

BISMARCK, N.D. - Gov. John Hoeven today announced that Sitting Bull College, located on the Standing Rock Indian Reservation in Fort Yates, has been awarded a $100,000 grant from the Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to assist the college with its continued planning for emergency preparedness.

The grant was awarded through FEMA’s Disaster Resistant University (DRU) initiative, created to help the nation’s colleges and universities identify hazard vulnerabilities and assess risks in order to protect their students, faculty, staff, research facilities and property. The program’s focus is to reduce the potential for loss of life and billions of dollars in damage.

Sitting Bull College’s proposal for the grant consists primarily of mitigation planning for its new facility, according to Vice President Laurel Vermillion, who was instrumental in putting together the grant proposal. Facilities Manager Clyde Oswald will oversee the use of the grant under Vermillion’s direction.

Sitting Bull College is North Dakota’s second institution of higher education to be selected as a Disaster Resistant University. North Dakota State University was awarded a similar grant earlier this month. In addition to this initial grant, Sitting Bull College and NDSU are eligible to receive more funding through the DRU program to further preparedness efforts.
