Hoeven: Congress Needs To Retain And Implement Country Of Origin Labeling
BISMARCK, N.D. - Gov. John Hoeven today in a letter to U.S. House Speaker Dennis Hastert and U.S. Senate Majority Leader William Frist called on the congressional leaders to retain the national country of origin labeling measure passed in the 2002 Farm Bill.
Hoeven pushed hard for passage of the farm legislation and strongly supported the country of origin labeling provision when it was passed two years ago. His letter urges the congressional leaders not only to retain, but also properly implement the country of origin labeling provision in the legislation.
“Our consumers have repeatedly expressed their desire to be well informed about the origin of their food products,” Hoeven said. “By repealing the measure, Congress will undermine our producers’ hard earned reputation for delivering the superior quality that American agricultural products enjoy around the world. At the same time, it will deny American consumers the right to choose foods produced in the United States of America.”
