Hoeven Announces Appointments To State Board Of Higher Education

BISMARCK, N.D. - Gov. John Hoeven today announced the appointments of Pamela Kostelecky of Dickinson and Richard Smith of Wahpeton to the State Board of Higher Education for four-year terms effective July 1.

Kostelecky was re-appointed to a second term, having served on the Board since October 2002. During her first term, she was a member of the Chancellor Search Committee and the Mission Review Task Force, and she currently chairs the Budget and Finance Committee. Kostelecky is the owner and president of Sax Motor Company, with offices in Dickinson and Bowman. She is also owner and president of General Investment, a real estate and insurance corporation located in Dickinson.

Smith is an attorney with Smith, Strege and Fredericksen in Wahpeton and has practiced law across the state for more than 25 years. Throughout his career, he has worked with various businesses, bringing valuable experience to the Board's efforts to more closely align education with the state's economic development opportunities. Smith serves as president of the Richland County Bar Association and as a member of the North Dakota State Bar Association, the U.S. Supreme Court Bar, the Federal District Court Bar and the North Dakota Council of School Attorneys.

"Pam and Richard bring a wealth of business and civic experience to the Board," Hoeven said. "Pam has proven to be a valuable asset with her commitment to education excellence and our youth, and Richard's broad experience and appreciation for the value of higher education will serve this Board and the state of North Dakota well."

The nine-member State Board of Higher Education is the policy-setting body for the North Dakota University System. The Board consists of seven citizen members appointed by the governor for four-year terms, one student appointed by the governor for a one-year term and one faculty advisor selected by the Council of College Faculties.
